This guy really needs no introduction at all; he’s been appearing on national + international lineups, radio stations, Youtube channels and more importantly, in the music charts for the past two decades. Long term commitment + ingrained, practised self belief has provided him with turn-key solutions that have proven over time, no challenge is too tough and no set back is too great to prevent him from achieving his goals in life. His dedication to raving & the scene from the age of 15 led him into the world of promotion in 1997 and since then, he’s never looked back. Historically, you probably knew him as Nosha D, or Defiance, but these days he goes by his new alias, Trauma…
Boasting an epic 31 track double album featuring house-hold names such as The Ragga Twins, Fearless & Stormin to name a few, plus countless topline singles + remixes; he’s back once again with a selection of new releases that will indubitably ruffle many feathers & cause absolute mayhem on the dance floor.
Ladies + gents, it’s time to get to know, Trauma…
Tell us where it all started for you..
I started DJ’ing Jungle/Drum & Bass in clubs around Cambridge & Newmarket in 1997 when I was 16 years old. By the time I was 18 my friends & I were running outdoor raves in fields & forests around Cambridge. We did this for 6 years & did roughly 20 events in the summer periods. We also put on events in local venues too over this duration. My friend (Joe 90 aka Joe Hector) & I set up an internet radio station in 2006 called Rapture FM which we ran together for about 5-6 years & it is still running to this day… Around 2008-09 I started working with Scott (DJ Sublow), Dean (MC N1) & Ben Meeks (MC Ridigator) putting on events (Double Trouble & Mighty Out Break) in Southend, Bury St Edmunds, Ely, Cambridge, Newmarket & Harlow. From the back of Rapture FM & the event promotion I was playing everywhere round the country. Regularly on the road & on the decks all the time playing DnB / Breakbeat / Hip Hop & RnB….. I played every where from Preston to Birmingham to Cardiff to Torquay to Hastings to Southend to Norwich & everywhere else that sits in between. Played at an amazing event in Istanbul Turkey as well which was great! Was doing regular sets at Random Concept, Moondance, Global Energy, Hysteria, Warning, Innovation, Sticky, Madness & more. Was some great times! I worked on Cambridge 105FM for about 3 years & was on Cre8DnB.com (DJ Blackley’s station) too for a while. Released a string of tracks on my Label “Urban Veteran Recordings” from artists like Vengeance, Roon, Illtaktix & more…..Plus a double album (31 tracks) which I did with Ragga twins, Stormin, Yardie, Simbad Fresh aka Nightmare 2 Fresh, Mr Melta, Maxwell Skott aka Kosh, Roski & D Boi Central. I used to go around to many rave’s back in the day with Shabba, Stormin, Swifta & Yardie this was good times & good fun but then I took 2 years out of music altogether because of critical health issues……. I had been ill for 17 years & was in and out of hospital for the past 7 years…. I was close to death on numerous occasions over this period…. The last occasion required an emergency operation to save my life in Sep 2014…. I then had another operation in June 2015 to finalise the procedures. I am grateful to the NHS & lucky to be alive for my daughter’s sake! However, now I am fully recovered & recently completed an NVQ Level 3 Personal Training Course, An SIA Security Course, Graded 4 times in Karate, Put on about 15KG of weight/muscle through bodybuilding & written a lot of music so currently I feel I am at my peak…. This means now & in the future I can be a positive role model for my daughter.
So now you have returned to music, what can we look out for?
Music wise….. I have had 7 tracks signed to “Hustlin’ Beats” which is MC Fearless’ label that will be coming out soon over the next few months on different release’s…. plus a 4 track EP (Distorted Perception EP) which came out last week on “Cutting Edge Soundz” & another single release coming soon on “Vengeance”. It’s a great sense of acheivement after being ill for so long & not being able to do anything. I have lot’s of projects I’m working on at the moment…. Out of about 50 on the go there are around 12-13 that definitely need to be finished off. That’s what I’ll be concentrating on for now…… Shout’s to Byron Vengeance, Scott Sublow, Chris Kaos & Pete Uniques for all their support………. Thanks to all the DJ’s & Producers who have given me positive feeback on promo push & that are supporting the tunes too out there in the raves & on the radio stations…..
Events wise… Got a few things in the pipeline coming up with with Hysteria (24th September / Newmarket), Breakdown (Innocence/Newmarket) & a new event which will be happening in Kings Lynn…. So watch out for all of these to come….
Radio wise… Currently I am doing regular radio show’s with Rytesize, Nightmare 2 Fresh, Sublow & guests on various different radio station’s like fenz.co.uk, rapturefm.com, illustriousuk.com & Cambridge 105FM. Did a guest appearance last week on roughtempo.com with Nightmare 2 Fresh on DJ Triplex’s show which was great. It was a brilliant set up to work on & hopefully we can perform on there again in the near future……
Also… working on a special project currently with Nightmare 2 Fresh & Rytesize which will come to light very soon…..
What are your influences?
I enjoy all music from 80’s to 90’s to Hip Hop to Heavy Metal to UK Garage to Hardcore Rave to Drum & Bass to Motown. Guns n Roses, Metallica, Snoop, Pac, Dre, Ice Cube, Wu Tang Clan, Nas, Queen, Bon Jovi, Oasis, Ram Records, Virus Records, Prolix, Spor, Shy FX, Friction, Hazard, Original Sin, DJ EZ, Slipmatt, Dougal, Tracey Chapman, R.E.M, Sting, Phill Collins, Corr’s & more….. If the formula of the music is written specifically to be a hit this is what interests me. I admire these artists I’ve listed because of their musical abilities within their work…… My favourite producer of all time is: Prolix…. The tunes he makes are absolutely amazing!! From all these artists that I have listed above, my influence comes heavily from them….. I am currently making Neurofunk, Jump Up, Jungle, Liquid & Even House, Dubstep, Grime & Hip Hop.
Any advice for budding producers?
Any budding producer’s out there: Learn the techniques you need to make DnB but try to get your musical influences from different genres…. I think this creates a better understanding of music on a whole…. Even better: Take up piano lessons…. I used to play piano, chello & guitar for quite a few years & have grade 4 music theory….. this helps out a lot, must admit. Also, there is a lot of experimental DnB out there which is awesome but quite hard to dance to!! So if you are aiming at specifically making a crowd rave hard then keep to a simple rhythm….. Dance music is all about rythym. Without correct rythym it won’t make people dance….It’s as simple as that…. You could have the best sounds in the world as a producer but if there is no rythym in your track…. it won’t work on the dancefloor. It will leave people confused… Some tunes out there are even just one note/tone but because the rythym is correct it works for a rave….
Whats the first DnB Event you attended?
It was 1996 when I was 15 years old: I went to “United Dance” in Stevenage at the leisure centre (which is funnily enough where I do Karate Competitions & Grading these days). It was Epic, I saw Grooverider, Roni Size, Andy C, Seduction, Billy Bunter, Dougal, Stixman & Magika, Vibes & Lively, Force & Styles play…… Probably one of the most memorable times ever…… This was back when the DnB/Jungle & Hardcore kept swapping rooms every set so you had to rush around the venue’s to catch the sets…..
Other hobbies or work outside music…..
Training & Studying Shotokan Karate (with Sensai Jeff Rand), bodybuilding & fitness (with my brother James, Concrete Patrik, Seany Walker, Nightmare, Audio Cee & Prince), Personal Training, Cooking, Collecting rare coins, Swimming, Studying, Meditation & working in Security….
Message to the world…
Look after one another, keep positive & make sure you set a good example for those around you & future generations to come…. Whatever you do….. ensure that you constantly progress to where you want to get to… always have an aim and stick to it…. no rush, just be commited & take pride in what you do……
