This guy has probably been the face of drum and bass since the mid 90’s after being introduced to dnb by the late DJ Kemistry who was his girlfriend at the time. He was a well-known graffiti artist around Wolverhampton and Birmingham in the mid- late 80’s. But it was meeting up with the ‘4Hero’ guys that he started doing art work for ‘Reinforced Records’ and eventually making music under the name ‘Rufige’
It was the release of ‘Terminator’ in 1992 under the name ‘Metalheadz’ that changed the way music at the time was made due to his introduction of timestreching and by 1994 the label was with us closely followed by ‘Timeless’ in 95, an album that reached #7 in the UK album charts. The stand out track was ‘Inner city life’ a 21 minute masterpiece that reached #39 in the UK singles charts.
All of this lead to acting in ‘Eastenders’ the movie ‘Snatch’ and also appearing in James Bond movie ‘The world is not enough’, as well as ‘Celebrity big brother’ and ‘Strictly come dancing’ he is probably the most well-known person to come from the rave scene into the public eye that even grandmas know who Goldie is.
This week’s set is from the world famous essential mix presented by Pete Tong on BBC radio 1 in 1996, where Goldie dropped the tunes that sound just as fresh almost 20 years on. Turn up your bass bins and kick back to the sounds of 1996 and some Metalheadz business!
And as a bonus as he is one of the surprise headliners at ‘25 years of Fabio & Grooverider’ I have added a set from ‘One Nation’ in 2006 where he is joined by ‘Shabba’ and ‘Skibadee’ for the 1st ever One Nation held at the Oprah House in Bournemouth.
