What is Smooth all about?
That’s a good one actually. Everyone that hears my artist name “Smooth” for the first time usually thinks I am making just liquid Drum and Bass and mellow stuff, but then they check my back catalogue and they are pretty surprised. “Smooth” is not all about a certain sub genre of Drum and Bass. I’m all about making music that I love and enjoy making at a moment. No matter what kind of music I might make, as long as I feel and love what I’m doing I feel “Smooth” 🙂 And yeah obviously I prefer making Drum and Bass. The energy that you can create in it and how this genre is technically tough is insane. That’s why it will never get old! And I will never get bored of it.
What does a typical day hold for you?
My typical day is waking up preferably not to late (which I usually can’t anyway ). Have breakfast with my gf, then have a good cup of coffee and the reason why I can’t always sleep it off is my little French bulldog called Freddy. That’s the essentials 🙂 the rest is making music most of the time and being lazy if not:) trying to get out of “lazy” habit 🙂
What’s your must have studio essential?
Definitely my Fl studio and KRK Rokit studio speakers, cant live without those two. Also my studio room, far from perfect but I’m just so used to it and I kind of know when a mixdown works or not. one of the really important elements when I make music is also my digital piano/midi controller Roland Rd-300nx. Always good to get an idea going before I start to make a song out of it!
What’s your must have non-studio essential?
I’d say the most important for me is to have a clear vision of what I want to do in the studio, makes a huge difference when it comes down to making music. The rest differs from time to time. But most usually it has to be coffee or sometimes red bull cause I tend to work for hours without any food or anything else sometimes. Beer as well 🙂
Top 3 tunes that changed your life?
The three tunes that changed my life. That’s a tough one. I will split it in 3 categories. The first one is the one that made me make music in the first place. And that one has to be Aphrodite – Karma sutra (and the whole Aftershock album for that matter) that was the first Drum and Bass tune/album that got in my heart and made me want to write music. Second one has to be Matrix and Futurebound – American Beauty. This one showed me that Drum and Bass can also sound so beautiful and still be dance floor at the same time. Definitely a gem! Also need to mention Brookes Brothers – Tear You Down which shows the same characteristics but in a different manner. And the third one no other then Sub focus – Xray. This tune hasn’t left my DJ box till 3 years after the release and I still play it. And this one showed me how a tune can pound on the dance floor like a boss. In this category I would like to mention Pendulum – Another Planet and Spor – Supernova 🙂 I couldn’t just leave it at 3 sorry 🙂
